On September 17, we celebrated World Patient Safety Day.
Patient safety is not only about providing quality medical care by healthcare institutions and their staff but also about following hospital protocols and communicating effectively with medical professionals. It requires the patient’s openness to treatment and a desire to improve their health!
Ensuring patient safety during a hospital stay is a priority for staff. Here are a few simple things you can do to help keep yourself safe in a medical facility:
• Ask for help if you don’t understand something. Inform the staff if you have any questions or concerns. Don’t hesitate to ask for support from family members, friends, or caregivers.
• Immediately inform staff of any allergies, such as to certain medications, foods, or materials like latex or adhesive bandages.
• Tell medical personnel about any medications you are taking. This includes all medicines, vitamins, and supplements.
• Clarify any information regarding your prescribed medications. Ask your doctor why they prescribed these medications, how to take them, and what potential side effects may occur.
• Don’t forget to prevent blood clots. This includes taking short walks, doing arm and leg exercises, and staying well-hydrated.
• Prevent bedsores. Change your position regularly while in bed. Ask staff for help if necessary.
• Protect yourself from falls. Wear comfortable, non-slip footwear in the hospital. Use walking aids if needed. If you wear glasses or hearing aids, be sure to have them with you.
• Help prevent infections. Always wash your hands after using the restroom and before every meal. Remind your visitors about hygiene practices and disinfectants. Immediately inform staff if you experience diarrhea or vomiting.
And when it’s time to return home, remember to:
• Clarify when you need to come in for follow-up appointments or consultations.
• Ensure you understand how and when to take any prescribed medications for home.
• Ask whom to contact if you have any questions about your ongoing treatment.
Stay healthy!
